I never desired to tell my story, but I needed to get out from underneath of it.

It had been 25 years since my first sexual assault and another 10 years since my second. It was two weeks before the #MeToo movement hit, and I had just requested copies of my medical records and police report.

Even though I reported my second assault to the police, my experience was representative of 97.5% of all cases that do not result in conviction, 80% of survivors who knew their rapist, and 65% that report having had multiple victimizations throughout their lifetime.

I needed to know what had happened to me. What I eventually learned though was that there wasn’t something wrong with me and my case, there was something wrong with the system that my case fell into.

After fighting for change for four years through a class action lawsuit against the City of Austin and the Travis County District Attorney’s Office for the mishandling of sexual assault cases, I now serve as a consultant leading the multi-million-dollar reform initiative at the Austin Police Department.
